CONSCIOUS DANCE FACILITATION

Conscious dance can bring many things: joy, healing, transcendence, trance, play, imagination, relationship, intensity, emotions of all kinds, etc. Often, it is several of these things, and all of them over months or years of practice.

Put simply, conscious dance facilitators offer a space and music to move in and with, in whichever ways you choose, or in ways that unfold as you let go. Often, the music starts off mellow, builds to a level of intensity, and then tapers off. A major opportunity is to allow, to permit those energies that we habitually suppress to move, and to move us.

When we let go into intelligences within and beyond us, we rediscover the innate spontaneity and joy that arise from our developing ability to trust the unknown, to let go of having to control our bodies, our relationships, or the next moment. We start to remember how to attend to the flow of life that immerses us.

Some guidelines for in-person at Guelph Conscious Dance:

  • As you enter the studio, remember that a container is being co-created, and that we are all moving into our own inner space.

  • Please keep conversations outside of the studio, unless:

    • You need to speak with the facilitator; or

    • You would like to be in physical contact with another, in which case please ask for their consent before making contact. At all times, ensure that the other person is clearly engaged and open to you before moving close to them.

    • It is opening or closing circle.

  • This is an alcohol and drug free event.

  • Dance barefoot or in non-marking dance shoes. Go at your own pace.

  • Allow others to have their experience without trying to fix or assist, unless it is an emergency. The facilitator is holding everyone in their awareness.

This is your time, your practice. Tune in, be curious about yourself, enjoy movement.

Tips for deepening your conscious dance practice:

  • Focus on your breath/breathe deeply.

  • Focus on your body sensations and follow your body’s instincts – how does it feel like moving in this moment? There is no wrong way to move.

  • Try moving your feet.

  • Focus on the music, its details or overall feeling tone.

  • Notice how another is dancing, and see how it might inspire your movement.

Dance what you feel to all songs: dance your love, your dislike, your boredom, your enthusiasm, and everything in between. Investigate how all of these feeling states want to move in your body.
